Here is my design career story, I really want to share a personal story with you—something close to my heart. If you’ve ever felt lost or uncertain about your journey, this one’s for you. It’s a story about how I found my way, told in three chapters.
Seven years ago, I made a life-changing decision. I packed my bags and moved to New Zealand, ready to start fresh. It felt like a grand adventure—a chance to explore a new culture, gain new experiences, and grow. I enrolled in school, hoping to immerse myself in this new world.
But reality hit me hard. Despite having some overseas work experience, I had no clue where my career was heading. The uncertainty was overwhelming. What path should I take? How would I build a career here? Everything felt so new and intimidating.
I didn’t let that stop me. I threw myself into networking, attending design industry events, and meeting as many people as I could. I wasn’t perfect—my communication skills needed work—but I kept pushing. I sent out resumes, made cold calls, and attended countless interviews.
Then, halfway through my studies, I landed a job in Wellington. It wasn’t just luck; it was persistence and a willingness to step out of my comfort zone. That first job gave me a sense of direction, and it was the beginning of something bigger.
Stepping into the workplace was a whole new challenge. Even with some experience, I felt like I was starting from scratch. Adjusting to the work culture in New Zealand wasn’t easy. I struggled with small talk, client communication, and even salary negotiations.
There were days I felt completely out of place, questioning everything: What industry should I focus on? What am I good at? How do I become a top designer in the market? The uncertainty was constant, and I didn’t have all the answers.
But here’s the thing—I didn’t give up. Even when I doubted myself, I kept going. And while I didn’t know what the future held, I trusted that the effort I was putting in would lead somewhere.
My turning point came when I met three incredible mentors. They didn’t just see my struggles—they understood them. They saw potential in me that I couldn’t see myself. They inspired me, guided me, and gave me the tools to move forward when I felt stuck.
Their support wasn’t just about career advice; it was personal, heartfelt, and exactly what I needed. With their guidance, I began to find my way. Slowly but surely, I gained confidence, clarity, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Eventually, I co-founded a design studio with my business partner. That experience opened the door to entrepreneurship, and over the years, I’ve been working toward becoming a mentor myself. My goal? To help others like my mentors helped me.
That’s how MatchupX came to life—a mentorship platform designed to help people, whether they’re from New Zealand or overseas, discover their strengths, explore career options, and find something they’re truly passionate about.
At MatchupX, we believe that perfection isn’t the goal. You don’t need to have everything figured out to take the first step. Just start. Be confident, but stay humble and curious. Consistency and staying true to your values are what truly inspire those around you.
